I suspect that there are many reasons that automakers build "connectivity"
into their cars. Some of them are just competitive, as in keeping up with
the other automakers' feature creep.

Other reasons just creep me out. For example, where and how I drive is none
of their damn business. No matter what nice things they can do with that
information, I'm not going to let them have it.

As for this particular case, I doubt that Nissan expected AT&T to shut down
their 2G (GMS) network. Five+ years ago, when Nissan first arranged with
(and paid) AT&T to use their network, even AT&T may not have known that.

(IMO, if we had decent telecom regulation in this nation, AT&T wouldn't
have been allowed to shut down GSM service, because it makes millions of
older GSM-only mobile phones obsolete and unusable. But that's another
issue entirely, and off topic, so I'll stop there.)

Not everyone owns a smartphone (about one-third of Americans don't).

Some don't always have phones with them in the car.

Some won't want the car using their phones, because they pay by the megabyte
or gigabyte for data.

A scant few (I'm among them) have their smartphones tightly reined in, so
that even if their phones are in their cars, they can't provide the kind of
data service Nissan or whomever might want.
