Barry,

The OEM bumper on my Ranger is on 2 steel plates (probably original)
that attach to the frame rails from the outside.

Apparently the converter selected one of the bolt holes in the frame and
instead of bolting down,

he used a rod with an R-Spring clip through it on both ends to secure
the plates stay in position and create the swivel point.

next to the rails. On the front top end of these plates he welded on 2
horizontal 1 ft long flat steel stock strips running towards

the front of the truck, so he could securely attach both rear support
beams under the bed to these strips.

The front of the bed is secured down with 2 steel hex bolts, long enough
to catch the threaded plates in the frame rails.

Result of this is that the original step bumper tilts with the bed, but
since the original mounting plates are used

I have confidence in the ability of the bumper to support some weight
and even tow light loads.

Hope this gives some ideas.

Cor,

Thanks. Great tip regarding the grounding!

I'll let you know if I need pics. I've looked at lots of conversion
with tilt beds. I'm trying to find the easiest way while maintaining
the OEM bumper. I'm planning on using electric linear actuators in
place of hydraulics or pneumatics.

Hi Barry,
I currently have a Ford Ranger with tilt-up bed and a solid bumper
that can be used for towing, I did not take any pics of the tilt
mechanism so I can make some based on what you exactly want to see.
Before this EV truck I had another one, an S10 which did not have a
real bumper, only the skirt wrapped around below the tail gate, but
nothing that would support towing or stepping on like this truck does.
I do have pics of that S10's tilt mechanism, in essence two large hinges
bolted to the end of the frame rails and two flat stock steel plates
attached to the bottom of the bed to transfer the force from bed to
hinge.
It also had two air springs to help raise it since it was a long bed.
My current Ranger has a shorter bed and no springs, only two pivot
points
at the end of the bed and a steel pipe (think broomstick) that rotates
on
a bolt at the end to prop the bed up.

One common issue on tilt bed conversions is the need to *ground* the
bed,
if you do not install a wire between bed and frame, your tail lights may
or may not work since they are only wired to get power from 12V and the
return (ground) is via the bed. Hinges are not a reliable return path.

Let me know and I can post some pics of this conversion, made in ~1995
using a 1989 Ranger.

Jay,

Little OT but trying to research design on a tilt bed for a pickup
conversion. Do you have any pictures of the hinges on the tilt bed as
well
as pictures of the bumper/rear end with the bed up and down? Or a link
to
the original converter's blog?

Thanks,
