% Happy Bday2me : Tesla-3 pre-orders start today, and the newswires are chocked full of buzz (see below for a few). Some factual, some misleading (to sell ad space), some anti-EV. But the fact-is many people are waiting in-line (ahead of time) to pre-order and they won't know all the Tesla-3 details until about 8pm on 3/31 afterward.
EV-history: Since I began my EV journey back in 1990 (my early days of learning about EVs by joining the EVDL as a noob, back when the Internet was new, etc.), and even with all the EVents I have attended and or arranged for with my Blazer EV, it isn't until now that (not just I but) we all begin to reap the benefits of all the hard work of all the EVangels around the world ... to get the EV-cause message out (we want affordable plugin choices in what vehicles we drive, with a public charging infrastructure). What brought all this contemplation on? As my (financial institution) phone call was finishing, the rep. ended by saying to me ' ... and Happy Birthday ... ' (she could see my Bday-date on her database screen) ... I mentioned that on my day people are waiting in line to pre-order the Telsa-3 (just mentioning Tesla, everyone knows you are talking about an EV). I quickly asked if you knew of anybody in her family that was interested in Electrics ... With a voice of respect (for the ranting old-man on the other end of the phone), she timidly said "yes, my boyfriend was thinking about one ... ". So, I took a minute to touch on how long I had been a good-EV-deed-doer, thus had been waiting until now for the Tesla-3 (200 mile EV) to be available at the more affordable price (not $100+k). The new Model 3 will be unveiled Thursday night and Tesla was to begin taking US$1,000 deposits in Vancouver at 10 a.m. when B.C.'s only Tesla storefront showroom opens. "Where to start?" said Joseph Preece, when asked why he left his home in Comox to camp out, along with his 65-year-old mom, Francine, on Tuesday morning at 929 Robson St., Tesla's B.C. showroom. The dairy delivery man fell in love with electric cars in 1996, when he was 13. He's been waiting ever since for electric cars to drop in price to a range he could afford and the Model 3, with a base price of US$35,000, fits that bill. The hitch is, while US$1,000 deposits are being accepted at Tesla stores as of Thursday morning (and Thursday night online once the Model 3 is unveiled at 8:30 Pacific Time), the earliest the company has promised delivery is late next year. "I am impatient, that's why I'm first in line," Preece said. "I've waited a long time and I don't want to wait any longer. "But I realize delivery is at least a year away." The US$35,000 sticker price doesn't really make the Model 3 an economy car. According to the Kelly Blue Book, the average price of all new cars sold in the U.S. last year was US$34,000. But compared with the Model S's base price of Cdn$101,900, plus Cdn$1,300 in documentation fees, it's a bargain at about Cdn$50,000. Grant Van Dyk, next to Preece and his mom in the camp-out lineup, was there for his wife. He already owns a Model S. "What's not to like?" the Point Grey resident said. "It's a phenomenal car, the performance is incredible, it handles any road condition, there's no cost to charge it." His wife raised her eyebrows when he told her his plan and grabbed his lawn chair, he said, asking him why he was doing this. "She'll appreciate it in a year or two," he said. The Model 3 has been kept tightly under wraps, with only a silhouetted image to tease visitors to Tesla's website. That hasn't stopped the automotive — and financial — press from speculating about what people will see when it's unveiled Thursday. It will be a Sedan, that much is known. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said 200 miles is the minimum drivers should expect out of the battery's charge. The Model 3 will be a bit smaller than the Model S, about the size of an Audi A4, Musk said, and will have its own platform separate from other Tesla models.
