Leading The Charge convoy driver Phil Lunnon explains how the fast-charging
station works to interested Whangarei locals

A convoy of six electric vehicles called into Whangarei as part of a road
trip promoting the electric car revolution.

The LeadingTheCharge trip will visit 39 towns and cities from Cape Reinga to
Invercargill during April.

The cars were joined by local electric vehicles (EVs) from around Whangarei
on Thursday.

The Tesla Model S took pride of place at the Whangarei event, with
interested locals able to go for a ride.

One of the cars was plugged in to charge, giving people the chance to see
the charging process in action, and ask any questions.

The Tesla Model S can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmh in 2.6 seconds, which is
faster than most other production cars.

It has a battery range of more than 400km and costs about $12 to charge
using New Zealand electricity.

Northland EV advocate Joe Camuso who owns NZ's first electric taxi - which
operates in Whangarei - says EVs save money on fuel and operating costs,
reduce greenhouse gas emissions and run on 100% NZ made electricity instead
of imported oil, keeping money and jobs in NZ.

Charge Net NZ is connecting the country with fast-charge stations. So far in
Northland they have installed fast-chargers in Kawakawa, Dargaville,
Kaiwaka, Tikipunga and central Whangarei with the help of Northpower, REV-Up
and Ecotricity.

This makes Northland the region with the best EV infrastructure in the
country.

There are now more than a dozen fast-charge stations across New Zealand.

The number of EVs in February was more than double what it was last year, up
to 1057.

Northland has the highest per-capita uptake of EVs in NZ.

"We have over 80 electric cars on Northland roads," Camuso says.

"The Charge.Net build out is accelerating with 15 sites under construction
nationwide expanding the fast-charge link for Northland Evs through the rest
of the country."

The 2000km road trip left Cape Reinga on April 6 and is expected to take 17
days. Various meet and greets and Gala events are planned in different
centres as the convoy makes its way down the country.

If you want to learn more about electric cars then head down to the Thames
Civic Centre this weekend.

A convoy of electric cars are travelling from Cape Reinga to Bluff this
month to raise awareness about electric vehicles and will be stopping in at
the civic centre this Sunday, from 9-11am.

The annual #LeadingTheCharge Road Trip is sponsored by the Better NZ Trust,
an organisation working to promote zero-carbon renewable energy technology.

Spark, which has installed electric vehicle chargers in a number of its
phone boxes, including one in Waitakaruru, is also sponsoring the event.

The Thames-Coromandel District Council says there's also an opportunity for
people to win either a Tesla to drive for a week, a stay in a luxury
off-grid bach or $800 of New World vouchers.

“The event comes a few months after the first commercial electric vehicle
charge point on the Coromandel was installed, at the Kopu Cafe.

“The PlugShare website also lists seven other charge points on the
Coromandel, most of them at motels and campgrounds.”

The cars making the trip are a Tesla Model S P90 full electric, Tesla Model
S P85+ electric, Tesla Model S 85 (LHD) full electric, Mitsubishi Outlander
plugin hybrid SUV and a BMW i3 plugin hybrid SUV.

American electric car advocate and advisor Chelsea Sexton will also be
attending.

Electric cars have no clutch or gears, and accelerate more quickly and
smoothly, in a 'sporty' way, when compared to typical petrol cars.

A fully electric engine has fewer moving parts, no spark plugs or engine
oil, and requires less maintenance than a petrol equivalent. Such cars are
extremely quiet and reduce noise pollution. Travelling down hills or braking
recharges the batteries, and is known as regenerative braking.

The cars have a range of 120-140km, and take between 30 minutes and 5 hours
to charge, depending on the car and charger. Filling up at the Kopu Cafe
costs $2.50/per hour.

The #LeadingTheCharge Road Trip stops in at the Thames Civic Centre on
Sunday, April 10, from 9-11am. For more information visit the Better NZ
Trust's website at: betternz.org
