Through the $20 million Electric Vehicle Chargers Ontario (EVCO) grant
program, the province is working with 27 public and private sector
partners to create a network of fast-charging electric vehicle stations
in cities, along highways and at workplaces, condominiums, and public
places across Ontario.
With our 27 partners, charging stations will be installed at a wide
variety of locations, including McDonalds and Tim Horton’s restaurants,
IKEA parking lots, Pearson International Airport, and at numerous
municipal properties and businesses across Ontario. Over the coming
year, about 200 Level 3 and 300 Level 2 charging stations will be
installed across Ontario at over 250 locations.
This expansion in charging infrastructure across the province will help
address “range anxiety,” a common concern of electric vehicle drivers
over the distance electric vehicles can travel on a single charge. By
building a more robust network of public charging stations across
Ontario, electric vehicle owners can now plan longer trips with more
confidence that a charging station will be accessible to support city to
city travel and daily commutes.
Construction will commence in spring 2016 and charging stations should
be operational by March 31, 2017.
Over 200 applications to the EVCO Program were received by the February
12, 2016 deadline, totaling over $165 million in funding requests.
Applications were received from businesses, municipalities, Aboriginal
communities or organizations, Local Distribution Companies,
non-governmental organizations, Conservation Authorities and other legal
entities.
