They came to the USA as a support race to the Formula E race in Miami and Long Beach. For those races, 10 complete kit cars were donate to local schools. My understanding is that the rules allow teams to build their own chassis but must buy their motor and batteries from the organization. The rules also are a little tighter, for example 4 wheels not 3.
After the Miami race was not renewed, Electrathon of Tampa Bay tried to contact the schools to invite them to race in their series. The Greenpower cars would be a bit slower but not dangerously so.
