I'm back from my trip and an education in EVs. Ok - I was over analyzing the
whole charging thing. I decided to wing it and using the advice I received from
the sage EVDL members (like taking an extension cord and talking to people...).
We stopped at a hotel in Syracuse and asked about an outlet. One of the people
there walked me out to an exterior outlet I could use and helped me get set up.
He said people ask for it a lot to charge trailer or boat batteries, so they
are used to it. In Montreal we stayed at an AirBnB that had a rare (for
Montreal) assigned parking spot behind the building AND a good, modern,
grounded outdoor outlet on the balcony of the apartment. I also used Plugshare
to locate an EV outlet at the planetarium when we visited. Just 120V and no
reserved spaces next to it, but with the extension cord I just managed it. I
needed the extension cord at all three locations. In Quebec they have installed
a 'Circuit Electrique' system, which has various fast charging stations
throughout Quebec. I did not use that ( though it looks good) due to location
and not having signed up before hand (like ChargePoint, you need a card).
Although they since told me you can use an app to turn on the charger. Anyway,
very successful trip esp. from the EV point of view.

I know I am marginal here because the Volt has gas backup, but for my needs it
is pretty perfect. My daily commute and shopping etc are all EV mode, but we
take trips reasonably often so the extended range is needed. The Volt lets you
'hold' the electric part on long trips so I can switch over to EV mode when we
got to the city, where it excels.

Yes, in a way. :-)

But i should point out that if the original poster is travelling in the
northern USA, essentially every motel already has standard 120vac outlets. They
have been there forever, for guests with diesel cars and trucks that need to
plug in a block heater so it will start in the morning!
