Torque Trends (www.torquetrends.com) has just released a single speed
planetary gear box specifically designed for EVs. It's not cheap--about
$4500--but it does allow for easy (and compact) mating of a motor to a
drive shaft. They make a version designed to mate to a Siemens motor and
one for a UQM motor that I know of. store.evtv.me is selling them along
with said motors and controllers. If I was building another truck today
(and I wish I was) and could afford it (wish that too) I would try it
with the UQM. I think the whole thing could sit in the old transmission
tunnel leaving the entire engine bay free for batteries and geegaws.

So I blew up the engine in my Japanese mini-truck, a Daihatsu Hijet. There is a
fellow Canadian who has posted his conversion photos of the same vehicle. He
left the transmission (and clutch?) in place. That might be the most cost
effective approach, but I'd like to know what I need to just go directly to the
transfer case. (It's a 4 wheel drive with 2-speed transfer case)
I know I'll need to manufacture a cover with a seal once the transmission is
out, but I'm more concerned with motor sizing/loading. If I'm also going to
need a gear reduction, then I'm not sure it makes sense to go that route.
I know that conversion is likely going to be more expensive than replacement,
but I would love doing the conversion as a recreational activity.
Thanks
