Toyota's reputation has already taken a beating from the allegations of self- accelerating cars. I can't see them risking it further by selling sub- contracted Chinese vehicles. FOR SURE not "low quality" anything. That would be immediate corporate suicide. It would make more sense for them to upgrade and rebadge Mitsubishi Imievs. Another (probably better) strategy would be to strike a deal with their competitor Nissan-Renault to rebadge Renault Zoes as compliance cars. A third course for them would be to collaborate with another automaker on a new EV. Volkswagen perhaps, if VW are really serious about using EVs to patch up their smog-besmirched image? You'd expect that if Toyota went the partnership route they'd choose a Japanese automaker, but don't forget their former collaboration with GM on ICEVs. Or it could be that their strategy is to simply wait, hoping that a US political shift this autumn will make it possible for them to bypass or entirely dismiss the ZEV mandate. After all, that worked for them before.
