Planned charging station in Midland right step for ‘future of automobiles’

NORTH SIMCOE – Sitting behind the wheel of an all-electric Tesla, one
wonders if this is the future of driving.

Penetanguishene’s Bert Desrochers says it is.

The former owner of Central Marine in Midland is one of the few owners of a
Tesla in north Simcoe – one of just eight, according to his estimate.

He decided to buy a Tesla Model S 85D, the mid-range of the Tesla line,
because it is the “future of automobiles.”

“It costs you 90 per cent less to operate, it’s environmentally friendly,
it’s fast and good looking,” he said. “What more do you want in a car?”

The government of Ontario recently announced it will build 500 new charging
stations for vehicles such as the Tesla, including 14 in Simcoe County.
Midland’s charging station will be located at the Tim Hortons on Highway 12.

Desrochers said he has owned a lot of vehicles, but none compares to a Tesla
in terms of quality and driving experience. The car is sleek and fast, able
to accelerate from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in 2.8 seconds on 600
horsepower.

“Electric cars develop all of their horsepower immediately, so the
acceleration is pretty incredible,” he said. “I’m waiting for the day when
some young guy in a Mustang pulls up beside me and says, ‘Hey, old man, do
you want to race?’”

Although Desrochers’ personal automobile is not equipped with it, Tesla also
offers a “ludicrous” mode in the Model S P90D, which allows the car to go
from zero to 250 km/h in about 29 seconds.

“The point isn’t they want to make a really, really fast car,” he said.
“It’s just a fact that electric cars are fast.”

The battery can last about 450 kilometres before requiring a recharge.

In terms of energy prices, Desrochers said it only costs him about $5 to
fully charge the battery at home. He said drivers can also tell the battery
what time to begin charging in order to get the benefit of cheaper hydro
rates.

The purchase price, however, may be prohibitive for a lot of drivers. The
top-of-the-line P90D retails for approximately $150,000, while the 70D and
85D come in at around $100,000.

But Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently announced plans to release the new Model 3
by the end of 2017, priced at US$30,000.

“That’ll revolutionize the market,” said Desrochers. “In a few years, around
80 per cent of the cars on the road will be electric.”
