The Pokemon Go fever has spread far and wide and it is being hacked to be
played on different platforms. But playing Pokemon Go on a Tesla Model S
electric car seems impossible. However, a man who is editor of a
little-known women’s magazine called Pink Java says that he has hacked
Pokemon Go to be played on Tesla’s in-dash 17-inch display.

Jeff from Pink Java Media says that he realized his Model S has all the
necessary systems to play Pokemon Go: a 17-inch touchscreen, a camera, an
ethernet cable and GPS.

He doesn’t reveal in details how he managed to make to app work, but he
actually released some footage of the app working on his touchscreen. All he
says that he started the App and drove around his Tesla to find Pokemon.

He has to use the reverse-camera of his Model S for the app’s augmented
reality features.

“It makes for quite a challenge,” Jeff said. “I almost backed over a
Rattata!”

However, almost all purist say that Jeff’s hack is a fake. In fact, Jalopnik
has posted a full article explaining why Jeff’s claim is fake. It also
updated its post with reply from Pink Java’s owner who says that the idea
was just a tongue-in-cheek joke.

Thanks for reaching out, I am the founder of PinkJava.
I have to be honest the Pokemon story got a little out of hand. When we came
up with the idea it was more as a tongue-in-cheek article to see if our
readers would start discussing if this could be real or not, especially
after Elon Musk answered a fan’s question if you could catch Pokemon with
the autopilot Tesla.
Anyways, I kind of regret doing this story, but lesson learned here.
I apologize for the confusion.
Kind Regards,
Ramon van Meer

[*UPDATE*] August 2, 2016, 9:50 am Editors Note: This was an experiment to
see if we could start a discussion about a story’s validity. Writing in a
satirical style, we left a few clues along the way that this was a parody.
Although we would love to play Pokemon GO with a Tesla, sadly, we cannot.

San Ramon, CA — August 1, 2016 — Pink Java Media editor Jeff loves Pokemon
GO. And he loves his Tesla. He wondered if there were a way to hack his
electric vehicle so that he could play while driving, merging his two great
loves. After all, the car has a 14 inch monitor, camera and GPS — all the
ingredients you need to play the hit mobile video game.

With a little bit of luck, some old-fashioned ingenuity, and an ethernet
cable, Jeff was able to get Pokemon GO up and running on his Tesla.

“It’s not perfect,” Jeff said. “The Tesla’s display cuts off some of the
game; I haven’t been able to fix that.”

Pokemon GO is a smartphone game in which players chase and capture virtual
creatures using geolocation. The phone’s camera makes it seem like these
fanciful beasts are right there with the player in the real world, with
different creatures appearing in different places.

CatchFootageJeff says he hops in the Tesla, boots up the game, and drives to
the various locations where Pokemon have been spotted. But there’s a hitch:
The only way to catch Pokemon with the Tesla is in reverse, as the Tesla’s
only camera is in its rear bumper.

“It makes for quite a challenge,” Jeff said. “I almost backed over a
Rattata!”

Jeff said he’s received requests to make other Teslas Pokemon-GO-friendly,
but he’s reluctant to actually tamper with someone else’s car.

“This is a trial and error process,” he said. “I once hacked my home so that
my lights would blink every time I received an email. But that got old
pretty quick and I haven’t been able to figure out how to make it stop.”

Jeff thinks Elon Musk would be impressed with his creative tinkering of the
Tesla’s firmware.

“Maybe they could push this feature out with the next update,” he said.

So what’s up next for this clever Pokemon player and his Tesla?

“Tinder,” he said with a smile. “Going to see if I can swipe right with my
turn signal.”
