Third annual event adds chili cook-off to fundraising events on Sept. 10

The 2016 ScienceWorks Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Show will feature electric
vehicles of all kinds, including bikes, a 1958 Nash Metropolitan, and a
Tesla.

Highlighting the third annual Southern Oregon Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Show
at ScienceWorks, the stunning new Tesla just purchased by retired architect
Barry Thalden of Ashland is guaranteed to knock your socks off with its
silent, energy hoarding, road-wise motoring, which virtually drives itself,
slowing down for cars that cut in front of you, driving you down the highway
without your hands on the wheel and, of course, loading up on a full 250
miles of juice while you do lunch.

The vehicle will be a crown jewel of the Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Show from
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Scienceworks Hands-On Museum, 1500
E. Main, Ashland. Instead of admission, the show invites donations of
nonperishable food at the door for the Ashland Emergency Food Bank.

The Thaldens were going to buy an SUV, for the ample space, but were sold on
the Tesla when they realized that, with no engine, there was plenty of space
in front and rear trunks, plus it matched their values as “very active
environmentalists” who set up rooftop solar panels dedicated to the Tesla’s
batteries.

The vehicle is a full-sized car and cost a whopping $90,000, but Thalden
reasons that “someone had to be first” in buying the sleek, futuristic
machine, helping Tesla founder Elon Musk capitalize for production of the
subcompact Tesla, due out in 2018 at $30,000.
Thalden enjoys showing the car’s many smart features. When he walks away
from the car, it locks itself and pulls in the handles and mirrors. When he
approaches, it unlocks itself. It’s autopilot tracks the road’s painted
lines so it’s hands-free much of the time. It keeps its preset distance from
the car in front of you.

It’s silent, of course, is four-wheel all the time and accelerates faster
than you can say “zero to 60 in 3.8 seconds.” Tesla superchargers are
sprinkled all over main highways now and “fill it up” free in 30 minutes.

“This car is from the future,” says Thalden. “Elon Musk is making us go into
the future and he’s pushing other car makers to go there.”

The show has been successful in helping motorists evolve out of the fossil
fuel age and its destructive greenhouse gas emissions, says show organizer
Pete Jorgensen, who will be showing off his tiny 1958 Nash Metropolitan,
re-engineered with an electric motor.
It was the show, he says, that inspired Thalden to get his Tesla. From the
show, the Southern Oregon Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Association was started.
It now has 20 active members, including one who has joined an estimated
400,000 motorists in pre-ordering a Tesla subcompact. The club bought a
Prius hybrid with a damaged power system, fixed it and donated it to the car
repair class at Ashland High School, says Jorgensen.

At the show, you can talk to owners about their electric vehicle experience,
chat with dealers of e-cars and e-bicycles and view an antique car rally. A
chili cook-off raises money for the sponsoring Lions Club, with some donated
to children’s health programs in Ashland, including AHS clinic and Asante
Uninsured Children’s ER Care.
