Make sure the DPDT switch is a break before make switch. An old golf cart is a good example of what you want. Two fuses, ON/OFF switch, forward contractor, reverse contractor, rheostat, and a FORWARD/OFF/REVERSE selector switch.

The brush location is "advanced" so that the magnetic field is at the optimum location for a particular direction and speed. Running such a motor in reverse often results in arcing or poor performance. Of course, if the motor was already intended for bi-directional use, it is probably timed neutral, and there's no problem. I agree that a mechanical reversing switch is best, which is easily done with a DPDT switch. Because of the brush timing issue, I know of no EV-intended controller that does reversing. :::: All of our economic and financial theories were derived during periods of expanding energy availability.
