Thanks, all, for your input so far!

My apologies, I should have given more detail about what I’m doing. The first
point to clarify is that I’m not running the lathe itself off this motor. It
already has a 1/2 HP AC motor for the spindle. I’m only building a secondary
power feed system to drive the carriage across the lathe. There’s a gearbox for
this already, but it doesn’t let you take the speed down to really slow speeds
so the finish you get isn’t as smooth as it could be. So for very fine work,
I’m planning on disconnecting the gearbox and engaging the secondary power
feed.

This leads to the second point: I’m only expecting to be using this motor at a
fraction of it’s maximum load. If I direct-connected the motor to the lead
screw (8 TPI thread) and ran it at full speed (190 RPM), the carriage travel
would be nearly 24” per minute! Even with a perhaps 3 to 1 reduction belt drive
it’s still going to be far faster than I’ll generally need. I’m planning on
primarily using this at perhaps a few RPS or less. Also, power feeding on a
lathe is generally only for a few minutes at any given time. Many times you’ll
be manually controlling the carriage or the cross feed. These two factors
should greatly cut down on wear and tear on the motor and it’s gearbox.

One of my main reasons for using this motor are is that I already own it. If I
burn it out, I’m not out much because it was a salvage motor to begin with. If
I do wind up needing to replace it, a windshield wiper motor will be my top
choice for the very reasons you give plus the fact that it should play nice
with any controller setup I wind up using for the seat motor.
