It's hard to know what they mean by $9K per car. Does that mean $9K for actual manufacturing costs? Does it include R&D? Does it take into account a declining price for batteries? If R&D is amortized, over what period? What about economy of scale?

It would be nice to see them find a way to claim a profit instead but, still, it's a pretty meaningless number without the qualifications.

I was under the impression that most entirely new cars (regardless of their motive source) were money-losers in their first years. That's supposedly why automakers prefer to build "new" models by adapting established bases,
no?  It keeps the tooling costs lower.

But GM don't whine about new ICEVs losing money, only new EVs.  Gosh, I
wonder why that is.
