Ouch.  :-(

To prevent such a disaster, I wonder if you could fit a simple latching 
relay and contactor in series with the high power feed to the heater.  That 
way, any time the car was shut down, the relay would drop out and not be 
allowed to make again until the car had been safely powered up.
