Hello Damon,

Just came up from the dungeon, I mean from the EV lab. I normally do a
pre-drive inspection about 30 minutes I leave. Make sure the cab heaters and
battery heaters come on which are power by commercial power through the main EV
power input plug.

I will have to leave in a short time, so here is a short list of equipment in
my EV. Will come back with more detail later.

Battery pack is three Nissan 225 volt 200 ah Li-Poly battery pack in parallel.

Battery charger is a PFC-50 Manzanita 12 to 400 vdc at 50 amp rating. Has
eight mode settings.

Motor controller is a Café Electric 1000 amp rating. Also has a motor ampere
indication circuit which I think is very important.

Orion BMS system which is enclosed in a cast aluminum box which has overload
limits for each cell circuit.

Net Gain Warp 11 motor that has a pilot shaft to drive a rotating inverter
alternator. This unit provides 7 kw of 110 vdc which is then inverted to 120
vac 60 hz at 5 kw.

The rotating inverter provides power and REGEN to the all the 12 vdc
accessories and four 120 vac 60 cycle heaters. One for the battery box, two
for the passenger compartment and one 1000 watt water heater for the existing
heater core.

Going down a long icy hill, this inverter load will hold the EV from increase
speed.

This EV has back up circuits which are control by a back up rocker switches
that are in a matrix of 42 switches in the console. Also acts like a cycle
lock system.

Roland

Four IOTA DC-DC converters only use as a back up. Control by a switch on the
dash that provides 225 volts from the battery pack by two 100 amp contactors.

There is no standard way of handling startup, so to say "most" is a bit
misleading. What you describe certainly does not fit the sequence of either of
my two OEM hybrids, nor does it match my two DIY EVs. There is no definitive
answer to the question posted.

Perhaps a better question needs to be asked. Something a bit more specific.
For instance, I am planning on converting an ICE to an EV. What is a safe
startup sequence to power on my 12 volt and traction circuits and what
components are required? Even then, more details are better, for instance do
you have a DC-DC converter, and what kind of motor controller are you using.

Most EVs and Hybrids have at least three contactors. The sequence is:
* Close One battery lead and check for leakage
* Drop that relay and close the other lead with a series resistor and
check for leaks
* Bring the first one back in to power up still via the series resistor
for a few milliseconds to allow the car system to charge all capacitors
* If still no smoke, pull in a main contactor to bypass the resistor.

You can hear the relay dance in any Prius or most other EV's.

There should be NO heavy loads until all of the above are complete. A
software glitch in the THINK CITY made the mistake of leaving the 4 kW
heater possibly on, so that on the third step above, the 4kW is trying to
go through a 5W 47 ohm resistor and it blows up. This kills the car, and
all replacement b0oards are gone, most cannot be repaired, and so the
company is out of business and there are lots of THINK CITY's just
gathering dust.
