Bill Wilen of Kent drives around in an electric car that’s powered by the
wind.

“I’ve had this 2015 Nissan Leaf for a year,” Wilen said. “It’s one of the
best decisions my wife and I have made. We wanted to do more. We wanted to
face the future and be realistic about what’s coming with global warming.”

Wilen and his wife vacation in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. While on
vacation, they started reading Canadian author Naomi Klein’s “This Changes
Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate” and visited The Center for Global
Justice, a multi-cultural research center where ordinary people collaborate
to create a more socially and economically just world. Wilen, also a member
of the Kent Environmental Council, said the trip and book gave him an
increased interest in sustainability.

“It shows how the petroleum and coal industries influence with money and
politics and lobbying and how we need to change that because science is
saying we’re going to lose unless we take initiative and go with solar
panels and wind,” Wilen said. “We just have a president that’s not in that
category.

“In Mexico, people from Canada and all over come this major global justice
center and talk about issues. We came home and wanted to do something rather
than just read and talk.”

Wilen charges his Leaf using a standard wall outlet in his garage. He said
it takes about 12 hours to get a full charge, but using a 240V charging
station can charge it in as little as four hours. He and his wife have a
2014 Camry for long trips because the Leaf car gets about 105 miles with a
full charge.

“Driving it is wonderful,” Wilen said of his Leaf. “The acceleration is
amazing. It’s light. It makes no noise. You don’t even realize it’s on.”

Initially, Wilen was using electricity from Ohio Edison to power the car,
but he wanted to switch to alternative sources. He learned from a
sustainability professor at Kent State University that American Electric
Power, one of the many electricity providers to Ohio Edison, uses 100
percent wind energy.

“We’re charing the car with electricity that is provided by wind
generation,” Wilen said.

Drivers can use a 240V charing station to get a fast charge. There are
stations at Walmart in Ravenna and the parking garage in downtown Kent.
Wilen said there’s an app to use to find nearby charging stations.

Wilen is trying to convince the Homeowners Association for Lakes at Franklin
Mills, where he lives in Kent, to let him put solar panels on his roof. His
request was refused because the panels would change the outward appearance
of the condominiums, but research finds that solar panels increases property
value, he said.

Wilen also sits on the sustainability ad-hoc committee in Kent.

“In Kent, we’re trying to help adopt climate policies and the Paris
accords,” WIlen said. The Paris Agreement within the United Nations on
Climate change is dealing with greenhouse-gas-emissions mitigation,
adaptation, and finance, starting in the year 2020.

“We’re trying to make Kent greener,” Wilen said. “We’re going to be
measuring all the CO2 emissions and all the sectors.”

Wilen’s electric car was part of the 2017 Green Energy Tour for Zero
Emission Vehicles.

“People parked there cars in an outdoor lot with all types of hybrids,” he
said. “This was the only full electric car.

“I would hope that people park behind me and say, ‘Zero emission. I might be
able to do that.’”
