British tradition meets the roboracing future

Goodwood is a place to showcase a lot of automotive tradition, and this
weekend's Goodwood Festival and Hillclimb promise to be hoot, as usual,
enjoyed by young and old alike But this week is historic in that Roborace
will have a fully autonomous race car take to the track with absolutely no
driver behind the wheel. The future meets the past in full glory. See the
Robocar take on the track as it did this past Wednesday.

There will actually be two autonomous vehicles taking on the Goodwood
Hillclimb. One is a vintage Mustang, which actually uses a pre-mapped course
for the software, whereas the Robocar is more advanced, navigating the track
as it drives.

The Robocar uses 360-degree vision that uses numerous sensor rather than GPS
(since the track has copious amounts of tree cover that inhibit satellite
communication). The Robocar has plenty of challenges, one of them being the
narrow width of the track. The Mustang will actually have a real driver
behind the wheel in case adjustments need to be made during the run or if
the system fails completely. The Robocar doesn't even have a cockpit for a
driver, so that option is out.

Roborace will actually be a race that backs the Formula E electric Formula
One series. Though there's no word on the Roborace series, the car itself
has the chops. Roborace claims the car will have upwards of 500 horsepower,
weigh in at a mere 2,149 lbs and hit 200 mph. Powered by four electric
motors, torque will be near instantaneous.

The Robocar should make an official run this weekend, with thousands of
curious onlookers. Hopefully, things will go off without a hitch, and
doubters will be silenced.

Even though there's no driver in the Robocar, check out the perspective from
what would normally be the driver's seat from Wednesday's historic run.
