Dyson creates £200m test track for his electric cars
Aug 31, 2018 John Fitzpatrick

VACUUM cleaner maker Dyson has unveiled plans for a 10-mile test track where
its new electric cars will be put through their paces. The company, founded
by billionaire inventor Sir James Dyson, bought a disused airfield at
Hullavington, Wiltshire, two years ago and has renovated two hangars at the
517-acre site.

About 400 staff are now based there and a further three buildings will open
in the coming months, bringing the company’s total investment to
£200million.

Dyson chief executive Jim Rowan said: “Our growing automotive team is now
working from Dyson’s state-of-theart hangars at Hullavington airfield.

“It will quickly become a world-class vehicle-testing campus where we hope
to invest £200million, creating more high-skilled jobs for Britain.

“We are now firmly focused on the next stage of our automotive project,
strengthening our credentials as a global research and development
organisation.”

Dyson, best known for its domestic appliances, revealed in September last
year that it has been working on an electric vehicle which it hopes will go
on sale from 2021.

The company employs more than 12,000 people across the world, with 4,800 in
Britain ...

The advent of electric cars, which are easier to make because they have
fewer moving parts than petrol vehicles, has seen a dramatic increase in the
number of new businesses trying to break into the motoring industry, from
Tesla in America to more than 300 start-up companies based in China.

Dyson’s cars are expected to be aimed at the upper end of the market, will
have some driverless features and may not even look like a conventional
vehicle.

Sir James said earlier this month: “What we are doing is quite radical.”

The company suggests that its vehicle is more likely to rival Elon Musk’s
Tesla than the likes of Toyota or Volkswagen.

It remains unclear where Dyson plans to build its electric car but the
company has previously hinted it could be built in Britain.

Sir James has been vocal in his support of Brexit and believes it will give
British companies a big boost.

He said previously: “Brexit can supercharge British technology.
