Hawthorne, Calif. on March 14, 2019. Tesla introduced a new electric sports
utility vehicle slightly bigger and more expensive than its Model 3, pitched
as an electric car for the masses. Tesla chief executive Elon Musk showed
off the "Model Y" late Thursday, March 14, 2019, at the company's design
studio in the southern California city of Hawthorne, and the company began

Iowans who had wanted to get their Tesla fixed were having to send it
out-of-state for the nearest authorized body shop to get new parts or
repairs.

We're talking Kansas City or Chicago, here.

But Willis Automotive, a Clive car dealership and auto body shop, just
became the state's first Tesla-Approved Body Shop Network facility — meaning
the luxury electric car company is willing to send parts and have repairs
done at the shop.

"There's definitely a demand," said Jason Willis, fixed operations director
at Willis Automotive.

More car manufacturers are relying on aluminum, rather than steel, to build
and produce their vehicles. Luxury brands such as Cadillac, Jaguar and Tesla
are already pushing out aluminum cars because of the material's light weight
and stronger durability.

The shift requires more training and specialized equipment to be able to fix
these cars. Not all body shops have both on hand.

Willis Automotive reached out to Tesla about becoming an authorized shop and
purchased certified Tesla repairs equipment for its cars and electric
battery packs.

The authorization required more than 50 hours of online training and several
weeks of offsite training to qualify, Willis said. The early fruits:
Already, six Tesla owners have dropped off their vehicles for maintenance at
the shop this week.

Tesla has received criticism for owners because of its long wait for repairs
and lack of service centers, according to CNBC.

This process is only the beginning of specialized training for workers in
the auto industry, Willis said. As vehicles utilize aluminum and more
technology such as automatic braking systems, body shops will need to keep
up.

"It’s the wave of the future manufacturers are going," Willis said. "The
welding must be precise on these vehicles.
