The automakers deliberately manufactured that demand with advertising. They did it because SUVs and crossovers are more profitable, and also because SUVs were classified as trucks and therefore less regulated. They're now trying the same trick in Europe, with dismaying success. But the EU isn't the US. Unlike the US, they have carbon goals. Their governments have noticed what the automakers are doing, and how it's affecting their ability to achieve those goals.
