It's hardly a theory; it's pretty common knowledge that the automakers deliberately manufactured demand for SUVs through heavy and aggressive advertising. There are many sources. A good one that comes to mind immediately is Keith Bradsher's 2002 book "High and Mighty." They wanted - and want - to sell ICE SUVs, crossovers, and pickups, so those are what they've advertised. Do you see them advertising EVs the same way, with the same intensity? Why do you suppose that is?
