Do these so called "drop in replacements" mention having onboard
protection/balancing circuits?
Several suggest special LFP chargers. That rather contradicts "drop in
lead replacement".
If they don't mention it in their literature, I would stay far away from
their battery.

This is the supplier for Teslas, at least Ss.

I thought that they had branched out to other sizes. But I didn't
notice other sizes.
My 2013 S was going through lead batteries about yearly. When it came
time for the 4th one and it was to be on my nickel, I got one of the
above. It has been in for several years with no trouble. Tesla, as far
as I know, still does not bless lithium 12v. Especially older Ss were
very difficult to change batteries on. And, the S size is very rare.
That means expensive. A lithium needs only to have twice the life of
lead to pay for itself.
