Ok so like I don't have enough projects to say grace over I have a neighbor
that is a retired moto-x racer and motorcycle restorer that gave me his Schwinn
Stealth 1000 to resurrect and "upgrade". He said he uses it to haul his trash
cans to the corner of his acreage and to putter around on. To say this guy is a
little 'bat shit crazy" is an understatement but when I said "yah, we can
probably bump up the voltage to 48V (motor is a 36V 1000W unit), put in a 48V
1000W controller and you would get a little more torque and speed" his eyes lit
up like a kid. Then I made the mistake of offhandedly mentioning "tho the real
hot ticket these days seems to be fitting a 52V Li-Ion pack with about a 1600W
controller, I saw a YouTube video of a guy that did this doing wheelies on his"
I think he drooled a bit. Especially when I said that with the aforementioned
Li-Ion pack he would probably double his range with half the weight. Mind you
this fellow is pushing 70 and has a picture on the wall of
him taking a sweeping turn on his KTM at 110mph. On the rear wheel !!.

So to the gist of this ramble I have been looking at those 18650 Li-Ion cells
online trying to determine the right ones to buy. I saw a YouTube video where a
fellow extensively tested 10-12 of the popular "high load" cells with 4 of them
being the chinese cells (claimed 9999ma cap etc) and the others the LG, Samsung
and etc. Apparently all 4 of the chinese cells tested were miserable failures
testing out at only 12-15% of their rated values. The japanese and korean cells
all had much better results that tallied with their stated specs. Now my
original thought was to simply pop on Ebay and buy a pre-made Li-Ion pack with
proper BMS. I have found a few with similar specs but with pricing on one at
$175 and others at $400+ and fully cognizant of "you get what you pay for,
hopefully" I am even more cornfused. After looking at this testing video and
getting no confidence replies as to "what cells do you use to make up your
packs" I am thinking that if we go the Li-Ion route I would probab
ly have to make up a custom pack with the right 52V BMS and good quality cells
to preserve my reputation as a resident genius. So now I am awash in cell and
bms choices. Does anyone here have recent experience with the current offerings
as to recommendations for brand / protection / no protection and bms for a 52V
20ah high load pack? And I am planning to buy a battery welder so would
appreciate recommendations for around a $200 unit. Thanks for listening and any
advice one would care to offer. Dach.
