Seems to me that most free piston engines operate as 2-cycle, so they don't 
have any moving valves, just ports that are exposed or closed by the moving 
piston.  However, I suspect you could improve efficiency by using moveable 
valves

In the past I've thought about trying to build a closed loop, solar(CSP) 
powered freepiston generator.  Perhaps using water or something with a lower 
boiling point.   
However, PV got cheap so quickly that I lost interest in the idea.
