We've got a question. We've been using the Request a Library Card form in the
Evergreen OPAC. We have customized it a bit. I recently received a question
about adding the Parent/Guardian field to the registration form. Apparently
there is a new project that will be happening in our department, and staff are
expecting an influx of registrations for juveniles. So they wanted to include
the Parent/Guardian field on the online registration.

I asked our consortium if they could add this field to our form, and after
investigating, they reported that they could not do this. Their explanation:
"We tried adding that field to your registration page on the development
version of your site, but the change caused a system failure when we tried to
create a patron. We looked into the reason why we were unable to add this field
and here's what we came up with:

When someone goes to register a card through this interface, the results are
sent to a database table called "User Stage". This table closely mirrors the
"User" table so that when a staff member registers the "User Stage", the data
is dumped directly from this table into the "User" table. However, updates to
the "User" table don't always make it onto "User Stage", and that is the case
with the guardian field. The only way to get this to work properly would be to
change the schema of the database to add this piece of data on the "User Stage"
table. "

This is surprising to us. We are not a public library, and have had few
requests to register juveniles so far. But since Evergreen was designed for
public libraries, we were quite surprised to find that we can't easily add the
Parent/Guardian field to the OPAC registration form.

I checked Launchpad and it looks like it has already been listed as a bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1897103), although there's not much
heat on it yet. Is this really not a problem for most public libraries? How
do you all deal with the problem? When registering juveniles, do they all have
to use an offline form to register?
