I've just caught the tail end of this discussion so I'm not sure if our
solution is pertinent to this issue. We use patron's barcode as their
authentication for all on-line/digital usage including Overdrive. When we
issue a replacement card for a lost or damaged one, we always ask if the patron
uses the digital library. If the answer is yes, then we have a couple of staff
members (it's not something everyone is authorized to do) who log into
Overdrive support and merge the old and new records. This gives patron access
to any holds on the card that was just deactivated with issuance of a new card.

Subject: Re: [Evergreen-general] Old Barcode/Username Change

There's the key. Both the old and new barcodes need to be active. We don't like
patrons to have two active barcodes.

Just want to offer some clarification. Before Bibliomation's upgrade to 3.6.5,
if a patron's username matched their inactive barcode, they could still log
into the OPAC, but the old barcode wouldn't work even though it was their
username (I think because of this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1255561). After the upgrade, if their
username was an old inactive barcode, they could not login at all in the TPAC
version of the OPAC, even with their new barcode. We tested this on a test
system we have running the Bootstrap OPAC, and the behavior is the same as it
was in TPAC prior to our upgrade (they could log in with the new barcode but
not the old one). Some community members generously tested this on TPAC running
a later version, but were not able to replicate what we were seeing. So, we
need to make sure there isn't some customization or unique configuration we're
running that's causing this, but since we're going to be transitioning to
Bootstrap eventually anyway and it's not a problem there, we felt a short term
solution might be best. So, we wrote some SQL to update usernames of the
affected patrons to their new barcodes.

Our consortium only uses barcodes to authenticate to OverDrive, so they still
would have had a problem logging into that service. We have learned that some
of our libraries just leave the old barcode as active so they can continue to
use it for OverDrive. The other option is that you can merge user IDs in
OverDrive Marketplace (video on this here:
https://resources.overdrive.com/merging-user-ids/).

And I appreciate the opportunity to ask questions about this! Some of our
patrons don't want to replace lost cards because they have set up accounts with
OverDrive and don't want to have to start over. If they DON'T need to start
over, we can tell them to continue to use their old number for their username.

Hi Gina,

We have seen some of this as well though I don't have any specific example to
share with you. I was going to open a bug but if you want to do that I will add

Hello Everyone,

We contacted library directors individually on Friday with information on the
issue some patrons were experiencing logging in through the OPAC. In short,
older barcodes that were saved as their usernames needed to be changed to their
current barcode in order to gain access. Today we have globally changed all
the affected patrons to have their usernames reflect their current barcode.

We produced shared buckets for each library to keep track of the affected
patrons for your records. If you would like your shared bucket ID, please
email me off list.

Thank you most of all for your patience during this situation. A reminder that
when you are replacing a barcode, please replace the username if the username
isn't set to a unique field that the patron requested.
