The singularity is an inference from general relativity extrapolated to 
arbitrarily short distances and high densities...where it cannot apply because 
it's not consistent with quantum mechanics.  When your equation predicts a 
singularity, it just means you've gone beyond the domain of applicability of 
the equation.  There's no singularity prior to the Big Bang and there's no 
singularity at the center of a black hole.

Okay, and I agree with what you said. One of the things that I find attractive 
in String Theory, that those hypothesized wee little vibrating strings so 
elegantly take care of the Singularities that crop up when GR and QM collide 
(in the world of the extremely hot and dense). On the other hand how much do we 
really know about this -- so far we still have no grand unified theory and are 
left with two theories that seem incompatible.
