If mechanism is true, the physical universe must be a statistics on computations (in arithmetic, thus). But if mechanism is false, then we might still be able to conceive some “ontologically primitive universe”, and it is up to those who introduce that hypothesis to be enough precise to be tested. A departure from the logic of machine observable in arithmetic would help them, but today, none have been seen (but that does not say much). If there were reason to bet on a Newtonian (non quantum) physics, <I would probably consider that mechanism is false, and that some magic/matter is at play. But there is currently no evidence, so why to invoke an ontological commitment which is that big. Physicists do make it in their work, only the week-end, when they do. It is those who makes an ontological commitment which are supposed to provide evidence for it. With mechanism, or in a dream, pointing on what we observe cannot work.
