A few nazis in the reich became odinists (Valhalla and paganism and such), probably a few satanists but no more than the UK had. Lots of remainers in the old Lutheran and Roman Catholic churches, because tradition and nothing better to do. My view is that saying "well, atheists are never to blame because our hearts are pure and worshipping the rules of the state are necessary!" Worshipping the state and not a higher authority obviously leads to The Gulags, The Killing Fields, The Great Leap Forward. High body count there, the highest in history, if you discount the bubonic plagues of Justinian in the 6th century and 14th. So what to do? Well, for me, I tend to go with what clicks for me, which is usually a triangulation tween my amygdala and my cerebrum. I tend to search and occasionally find the works of scientists and scientific philosophers that give models of how things could be better and more interesting than atheism or religious fanaticism, which tend to piss me off (my amygdala reacts). So, for me, and obviously not for you I like the idea of taking this stuff seriously.
