First of all, GPT-4 is much smarter than chatGPT, so you should try that.
And for reasons that are not entirely clear, if you find it acting dumb on
a particular problem you can greatly improve performance by encouraging it
simply by ending your request with the words "*Let's work this out in a
step by step way to be sure we have the right answer*".

Also, there are an infinite number of ways to prove a true statement, the
fact that chatGPT did not use the proof that you personally like best does
not necessarily mean it doesn't understand the concept involved because the
shortest derivation is not necessarily the simplest if "simplest" is to
mean easiest to understand. If that's what the word means then the
"simplest" would be a subjective matter of taste. A proof that's simple for
me may be confusing to you and vice versa even though both proofs are
correct.

And by the way, currently GPT-4 is as dumb as it's ever going to be.
