Ok, it turns out the fonts are not embedded in the file, as I expected
already. I think Evince (well, Poppler actually) on my Debian system tries
to display it using the "Nimbus" fonts, residing in
/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/n*.pfb. Could you try installing those?
