I don't know if there are somewhere:

Sync: The Emerging Science of Spontaneous Order by Steven Strogatz.
2003

John Maynard Smith, Eors Szathmary. The Major Transitions in Evolution. OUP. 1995

Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela. The Tree of Knowledge: The
Biological Roots of Human Understanding. Shambhala. 1987-1998

The Selfish Gene is also important, but Francis has it. I would
recommend Turchin's book, which is online http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/POSBOOK.html

Don't ask, but somehow I was offered a free copy of Wolfram's book "A New
Kind of Science", so if anyone is interested, they can take a look.
Also, if someone has rats, they can use it to smash them... (it's ~3Kg)

> 125 pounds, if spent wisely, should cover 3-4 books. So, please

I would strongly advocate for
What is Life? : With Mind and Matter and Autobiographical Sketches (Canto)
by Erwin Schrodinger, Roger Penrose
http://titles.cambridge.org/catalogue.asp?isbn=0521427088
Only 12 GBP
