Subject: Re: [Evolution] New Evolution User Documentation

Dear all,

While compilation of a software is typically not part of the User guide, I
believe it makes sense with an open source project where users should be
encouraged to try the bleeding edge.

I am also saying that because I always have issues with compilation of the new
versions like new dependencies on exchange mapi, glib, gtk, etc. (As of now I
can build evo-mapi for 3.1.4, (which crashes, but it is OK for development
software), but still need to dig into svn logs for the compatible libs for
3.0.2
or 3.1.3.)

So do you agree that reasonably detailed "building Evolution" howto-s for some
popular distributions would make sense, e.g. as an Appendix?

I'd like to cover syncing with other devices as it's a common question,
however it's one of those pages in the new docs that I am not happy
about, and who still uses ancient Palm devices?:-/
The page is basically copied from the old guide, because of missing
knowledge and no opportunities to test, and the help page even says "If
you can provide good practices or more information on this topic feel
free to file a bug report in GNOME's bug tracking system".

A similar problem with documentation might be evolution-mapi and
evo-groupwise[1] that should only be shown if those packages are
installed (see [2]). That's something to sort out later...

Hi :)
If it's possible to have a couple of pages describing an idealised or general
case and then give links to places that are more likely to be specific to
distros then that might be a good compromise? It seems that a lot of answers
to
problems with Evo quite often need devs skill to fix and it's tricky to find a
garage mechanic sometimes! A brief couple of pages might help non-devs.

I do know at least 1 person that still uses an old Palm. Not me of course, a
friend. Well, a parent tbh.
Regards from
Tom :)
