That 'bug' wouldn't cause this problem unless the server is adding headers, the fallback code should still work. It may not even have anything to do with it, depending on the server.
Are there any differences in the headers from the two copies of the messages downloaded? e.g. additional Status headers (although we should ignore (X-)?status anyway.
