This works if each task gets 100% of your available time. Most times you are working on several tasks at the same time (10% to this, 30% to that, etc.). Solving this would add the complexities of taking % of time allocated to the task, and assigning that many hours of the work day. Of course meetings eat into the available time a resource has, and would need to be able to be flagged as related to the task (and thus part of the allocated time) or not (and thus eat up other currently non-allocated time). I think sticking with your first proposal of just showing tasks in a bar across the days, if they have start and end dates, would be the easiest first step. Maybe introducing the complexities mentioned above in a future release. Anyway, overall a good idea - IMO.
