I am on Ubuntu 16.04. I have to use lauchpad 
https://launchpad.net/~mercurial-ppa/+archive/ubuntu/releases

To get only  4.4 but nothing more recent.

That is not what the documentation says hm you are right there is a deb
in the target file. I will try that, that would be of course great.
I see now that evolve has a deb-prepare target, interesting.
