I've found that in our organization, it's saved a lot of time. It's much faster then either phoning, or running down the hall to ask a quick question. Also, it acts like a real time free/busy notifier. We have people who waste time on it, but before that, they were wasting time on yahoo mail, personal websites, etc.
I'm sure it would be possible to rig up a system to save all conversations. People have done it before.
