Don't worry if they are Outlook with MAPI and OWA. You can go ahead and
make the restriction. Your users do not need to access SMTP virtual
server.

Thanks for the reply.

My clients use both Outlook w/MAPI and OWA. Yes, my clients use
Exchange for delivery both inside the IS and to the Internet. Does this
mean that I cannot block like I am explaining?

Sounds good to me if no one else needs to connect to the Exchange
server, set the block on the SMTP virtual server.

Do the clients use Outlook with MAPI or OWA to compose messages?

Or do they use a POP3/SMTP software like Outlook Express? If so do they
connect to the Exchange server to send mail? - restricting the
connection on SMTP virtual server would block the user access.

Subject: Blocking connections to Exchange 2000

Hello.

I use an POP (Imail) server as a virus and spam filter gateway. That
is, that I have a POP server on the outside of my firewall and an
Exchange 2000 server on the inside. The outside POP (Imail) provides
virus and spam filtering. And after filtering, the mail is forwarded to
the matching account on the Exchange server.

I want to block all connections to my Exchange server except from the
POP
(Imail) server. Would this be done on the SMTP virtual server under the
SMTP protocol or on the SMTP Connector? Is this a good or bad idea?

I still need to be able to deliver Internet mail outbound from the
Exchange server.

Thank you.

Sam
