Exchange 5.5

I am running Exchange 5.5 Enterprise server on Windows 2000 advanced 
server. I inherited this system and this is the only Exchange 
environment I have worked with. My question is does Ex. 5.5 Enterprise 
have to run on Advanced server? All my exchange servers are also Domain 
controllers. But if my exchange server wasnt a DC, would I still need 
advanced server?
