Yup I tried account, Domain\account and domain\container\account but all three return the same error. BUT bingo! Forward slash it is!!!! Atleast in Outlook Express. This user has a MAC so I'll have him try forward slashes tomorrow.
I probably also confused the issue by turning off the Anonymous Access like every article I hit on with that error said to do! Arrrrrggg. So did I mis-interpret this article or does it say you're a potential open relay unless you turn off anonymous access? If I am reading it wrong, where is the warning that says if you turn off anonymous access expect all your inbound mail to stop. Double Arrrrrrrrrrg! http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;818778 Thanks Jim -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ed Crowley [MVP] Sent: Tuesday, February 24, 2004 1:04 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: SMTP Relay You're authenticating with account "domain\account" or "domain\account\alias" if alias <> account, right? You can also use forward slashes because some POP clients don't like backslashes. E2k3 server with multiple domains running pop3 service. Users can pick up their email from the pop3 server just fine but they cant relay email through the server even though I have allow relay for authenticated users turned on and specified in outlook express that my server requires authentication. I've tried every combination of authentication settings. I have anonymous access off. These users only have one SMTP item in their profile and that is for their own domain. The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was 'EmailAddress'. Subject 'Subject', Account: 'Account', Server: 'Server', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '454 5.7.3 Client does not have permission to submit mail to this server.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 454, Error Number: 0x800CCC78 I've searched for this error but the only hits I get are how to prevent relaying. I want to allow relaying for authenticated users but the system keeps refusing with the above error. Basic and windows authentication is on. Relay is on for authenticated users and just for fun I tried adding a specific user. Yet it continues to disallow the users. The users in question are in their own containers. I've called M$ but it's a 4 hour hold time for an engineer today. :( Thanks Jim _________________________________________________________________ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchange&text_mode=& lang =english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe via postal mail, please contact us at: Jupitermedia Corp.
