Fine, but the criteria presented was that students be able to send mail only
to THEIR teachers.

hmmm ... I don't want to get into a debate over restrictions on kids ...
the hippie side of me (which is just about all there is ) doesn't like
restrictions, however the reality side of me sees applications ... if you
would like to have a beer and discuss this at one of my bonfires out in our
woods, everyone is welcome (bring your own marshmallows, I will supply the
beer and hot dogs ) ...

anyway ... in my test lab I did the following, which seems to work without
any noticeable errors ... i.e. it allows students to be a member of our
forest, while restricting their delivery to themselves and their teachers
...

I created another server in our organization and put all the student
mailboxes on it ... I then edited the SMTP virtual server on this restricted
server to not allow connections from anyone, and set a bogus smart host up
for outbound delivery (I also lowered all the timeouts to
1 minute) ... I also restricted the POP3 server from external connections
... I created a second mailbox for the teachers that also is on this
restricted server and gave the teacher's primary user object full access to
the mailbox on the restricted server and mounted it in the teachers Outlook
client ...

It seems to work fine, no errors that I can see in the event viewer ...
the students at this test high school can send mail amongst themselves on
the restricted server but cannot send mail out or receive mail ..

Comments? Criticisms? Gotchas?

Thanks,

Mike

You do that by setting delivery restrictions on everyone else in the
organization to restrict delivery from those folks. I know that's not
what you want to hear. May I recommend you just tell them that they
can't send mail to anyone outside their class and enforce the problem
administratively? There are seldom good technological solutions to
behavioral problems.

By the way, maybe if you leave the restrictions off you'll find a little
less graffiti in the restrooms.

That only restricts who they receive mail from .. I want to restrict who
they send mail to ...

I think that my only option may be to add another Exchange server to my
organization, put all the students mailboxes who are learning Outlook on
it, and not allow mail to leave or come into that server(i.e. mail can
only be sent among users on that server) ... I will try this out in my
test lab ....

What you all think? Any other ideas?

Mike

we have students who we only want to allow to email their teachers ...
