I just put about 70 relatively heavey users on a dual xeon 3.06 w/2gb RAM. Its also used for Norton corporate, file and print sharing. We moved from a dual PIII 800. I would think your hardware was a little light.

I would not put 1000 heavy messaging users on such a server. Grossly underpowered in my experience. I might consider it if you had a quad processor 400MHz system with a couple of GB's of RAM. I agree that putting half that number would be more reasonable, but still only if they are light usage. For heavy usage - get more power.
