Custom recipients are not supposed to have addresses in your domain.
That is the whole point of them.  You only add the external e-mail
address.  I'd suggest removing the internal address, and trying it
again.

Hi,
We are running 5.5 sp4. I created a custom recipient with an address in
our domain, then added an additional address from an external domain and
made that the default reply to address. Now when I choose the CR from
the GAL and send a message I get an undeliverable message saying "Unable
to deliver the message due to a communications failure". 

I can send to the external address if I remove the CR. And this is
happening for any CR I create that has an external "reply to" address.

Anyone have any ideas? Let me know if you need more info.
