Hello,

In-place upgrade would certainly simplify the "SWING and SWING BACK"
upgrade to E2K3. I have been a fan of the in-place upgrade for Exchange
from the Betas of the mid 90's.

BUT, the 5.5 to 2K inplace upgrade worked very poorly in production
environments for us and others I'm aware of. And in addition to an
inplace upgrade for Exchange you're probably also doing the OS.

Are the 2003 upgrades for Exchange and the OS primarily just "Service
Pack" type upgrades, or are they significantly rewriting the Database
tables, etc.... ?

I feel burned from the 5.5 to 2K inplace upgrade, and the couple extra
hours needed to remove the "first server in the site" (maybe DR it to a
cheap PC for a month or so in case OUTLOOK clients need to see it to
resolve where their new home server is) and bring it back up with a
fresh install of 2003 Exchange and OS might save many hours in the long
run.

I haven't heard any horror stories of inplace upgrade to E2K3... but
it's still fairly early ... Any success stories out there of E2K3
inplace upgrades outside of the test lab?

Brent

Now do an in-place upgrade of the old server and move everyone's
mailboxes back - no need to remove the first server ;)

Subject: Upgrade to Exchange 2003

Hi,

I have just upgraded my Exchange 2000 system to Exchange 2003 by
introducing a new 2003 server and moving all mailboxes and public
folders to it. I then upgraded the original server to 2003. Now I want
to decommission the original server and completely remove it from the
organization. Is there a recommended way to remove a server cleanly ?

Thanks,

Tony.
