Exchange 2000, or 5.5? If it is 5.5, you can set up a separate OWA-only server.
If it is 2000 or 2003, then you would set up a Front-end server. You would then simply put the link to the Front-end server on your Intranet page, and when the users hit the FE server, the FE server will do a query to determine which BE server the mailbox is on.
