Ask the engineers what the support path is.... We had one of our mailbox servers cough up an -1018 error. As their wasn't any obvious hardware issue, I wasn't thrilled with the prospect of restoring the information stores back to the original hardware. Our management had decided that having a hot-standby server wasn't all that important, so when the server died I gave them the 3 options we had available: restore to the original hardware, leave it down until we identified the source of the problem, or bring it up (temporarily) on a VM (ESX server). They though that VMWare seemed like the least bad option.
We've had several bluescreens on that VM Exchange server in the 4 weeks or so it's been running there. It's still a temporary thing, but it just takes forever for us to get replacement hardware through the approval process. VMWare has made decent efforts to help us, but so far nothing has gotten the server in what I'd consider a reliable state. From an activity standpoint, the server has about 800 active mailboxes and generates ~800MB of transaction logs on an average day. For what it's worth, we have about 80 other VM servers and they're running very well. For some reason, Exchange doesn't in our case. YMMV. -----Original Message----- From: Stephens, Tara [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 18, 2004 11:27 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Engineering argument Our engineering guys (who have no email experience at all) are trying to make the argument that we should move our Exchange environment to Vmware. I know that Vmware is good for test labs, but has anyone run it in production? Their website says that it works with Exchange, but they want to sell their product. Please let me know if you have any horror stories or fairy tales about that configuration. Thanks.
