What is "SMTP dir rep"? The SMTP standard does not provide for directory replication.

Sites are in different countries and have no network links to each other but do dir rep via SMTP. Site A is running Server 2003 in mixed mode. The current Exch 5.5 server is a BDC on NT4. Site B is running NT4 with Exch 5.5. The Windows doamins in the two sites are different and have no trusts and no network connectivity. I will be installing a new Exch 2003 member server into Site A and moving the mailboxes and PF's off of the 5.5 server. Once this is done I plan to remove the 5.5 server from the Exch org and take it off-line. What I am trying to find out is if this new Exch 2003 server will be able to do SMTP dir rep with the 5.5 server in Site B as the old 5.5 server is doing now? Site B is going to remain on NT4 for another couple of months til it too gets upgraded to Win 2003 AD. During the install in my test lab I get hung up when the ADC tries to forge a connector agreement with the 5.5 server in Site B -- there is no way to pass the credentials. What I have to do to proceed is to remove Site B from the Exch org and just make the agreement with the local Exch server. However I must have these two servers replicate and maintain one GAL. Will there be a way to rejoin Site B if I have to break away in order to get the install completed?
