The best way to use spamassassin, IMHO, is on a dedicated mail gateway box running something like MailScanner (www.mailscanner.info) which adopts a very flexible rule-based approach integrating spamassassin, virus scanning, filetype and fielname blocking, disarming dangerous html tags, and more. We use it here on a linux box with spamassassin 2.63 with the SpamCopURI addon and the surbl.org blocklists, along with a bunch of rules from www.rulesemporium.org, as well as custom stuff. All monitored with Mailwatch, mailscanner-mrtg and Vispan (which dynamically blocks spam / virus senders by adding entriess to sendmail's "access" file). All emails are scanned using ClamAv and Bitdefender (free for Linux). Only costs are hardware and time. MailScanner and Mailwatch support are second to none (I kis you not) via their respective mailing lists. The reason I prefer this approach to an addon on your Exchange boxes is that 95%+ of spam and all viruses are blocked before they come anywhere near your Exchange servers, so when you get a virus alert from an Exchange server you almost certainly know you have an internal infection.
